Business

Well let's see. Instead of focusing on the things that I have done, I need to focus on what I have not done.

I have still not signed up for classes.
I have still not read a book that I have to read for next week.
I have still not made that CD for Tiffany I said I was going to make yet.
I still have not figured out or not whether or not I'll be back in school next year.
I have still not called numerous people that have left unrelenting voice mail messages.

So I'm wondering.......... is my life that busy? I really need to sit down and figure things out. With these new night classes, all this basketball and day class and homework and Sandspur stuff that I have to do, I'm sure there will be a time. Only soon.

Katie Couric and Conspicuous Consumption

Apparently in Friday's class I missed something on Katie Couric and conspicuous consumption. Well, Katie Couric is the host for NBC's Today Show, I think. All I see is a flashy white lady that looks in her mid 30's flashing rings that look like they are worth $30,000 a pop. Veblen's term comes true especially among the impoverished. Many impoverished minorities buy expensive cars, flashy rims, expensive brand name clothing and lavish houses when they make a good amount of money. They do it because many of them have spent their whole time living in "black cotton"- which is a term that symbolizes unrewarded struggle. They spend their whole lives dreaming about living the good life and one day getting out of poverty. Once they get out of poverty, they feel like they have no choice but to splurge.

I do not think conspicuous consumption is a big problem in college. Students might be managing money, but it is money that is not their own. It is loan money or their parents' money. Students might conspcuously consume beer or alcohol because they feel like they might need to do it to fit in with their college friends, but with money I do not feel like it is an issue at all.

Back Home

Well, it's only March 13, but it's been a long and hectic month.

Today I just got back from Mississippi after being there for the South Regional for 5 days. It was weird. I had fun but yet I did nothing but go to practice, play the game and sit in my hotel room and eat the whole time. In Mississippi there was nothing to do. The highlight of the trip was when I went to the Delta State Library and found out that Foxlink was down and I had no new friend requests on Facebook. That was the only time I used a computer in the last week other than now.

We ended up beating Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday and lost to Montevallo on Sunday. Our final record is 24-8. We had a great year. Being picked to finish 7th in our conference and we won the conference regular season outright and we won the conference tournament.

After being in seven cities and four states in Thirteen days( Orlando, FL, Zephyrihills, FL, St. Leo, FL, Atlanta, GA, Memphis, TN,and Clevleand, Mississippi), I found out that traveling can get old sometimes, and being in hotels( even though when someone is paying for it) can be a pain if you do it for a continuous amount of time.

You would think I could get some rest after the season being over. But no. Spring Break came and went. I missed two full days of classes and I have a dungload of stuff I have to get to before Wednesday. I'm hoping my professors will cut me some slack for all the hard work I've been going through the past two weeks. We'll wait and see. I have alot more to write, but I have to get to bed because I have to go to class tomorrow.

Love, Peace and Hairgrease.

Conference Tourney

So I get an "early Spring Break" as I leave today for the conference tournament in Saint Leo. but it is not necessarily Spring Break because I am on official school duty. Hopefully we stay until Sunday night and then we weill go to Regionals next thursday and then I will miss Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday when I come back. How sweet would that be.

Anwyay, before I can get premature thoughts we have to take care of business against St. Leo next week. After that we would play the winner of Tampa and Eckerd on Saturday night.

My boys from Winter Park play tonight against Vero Beach in the state semifinals. If they win they will play Saturday night at the Lakeland Center and hopefully I can go watch that.

I know not haveing Spring Break would suck, but there is going to be other times where I can do other things. I didn't have much of a winter break, only about a week off before I had to do basketball business for the rest of the time. This opportunity won't come around every year so you have to put your other activities on hold so that you could take care of business and take full advantage of this opportunity.

Hypertext

We just read this hypertext for Wexler's class. It was weird and funny at the same time because I didn't get it at first and then I figured it out. This one girl though, was ranting about how much B.S it was and it was hilarious. It was right. This dude's wig must be a little cut-up.

Anyway, I've gotten about 13 hours of sleep in the last 36 hours, which is good. Busy day yesterday, big day tomorrow, and I don't have any plans for today. I might actually get ahead on schoolwork.

Yesterday I went to the AOPI Crush Party. It wasn't all that, but I just went there and ended up talking to some people. Before that I had a game, 25 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists in a win, and a project to do. After class yesterday I took a 4 hour nap, which was refreshing.

I'm out, got last class of the week. Love, peace and hairgrease.

Busy

Life has been busy lately. Since Thursday I've had three tests, 3 basketball practices, 2 basketball games and an intramural games, not to mention countless hours of practice.

Firday that Math test wernt well, it paid off to study with Jackie.

Saturday we had a game vs. Barry, we won by 16. Isaac had 19. there was a little postgame scuffle between some students and some Barry players. It was hilarious and just a snippet of how bad Rollins security really is. I'm cool with some of them, but one thing that my uncle taught me was to never make friends with no 5'0's, so we'll leave it at that.

Sunday I had 31 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals in my intramural game. Then I watched the All Star Game, and did some homework and that's about it.

Monday I did a whole lot of studying and today we had practice and I did some more work and now I have to go to another basketball before I ahve to go back to the paper for copy-editing.

I've been thinking about leaving college after this year. For some reason, I'm just curious to see what it would be like. People have been telling me that I should stay in school for as long as I can. I hate going to class. I hate having to spend so much time in the library. I hate doing all this homework and if I don't do it, it's not like in HS, where if you don't do it, you'll be OK. You're screwed if you don't do it. We'll see what goes down. Maybe I'll change my mind, but I do what's on my mind, and I feel like I should try something else that is not going to school. I don't have an answer to what I'm going to get out of college, but it seems like the only thing I'm getting out of it right now is on the basketball court and not in the classroom.

Life

Well, I don't know what to name my post, so I'll just name it life. I've been pondering what I should write about ever since we left class on Wednesday, so I guee I'll just write about what I know best and that is the game of basketball.

Anyway, Wednesday we played Tampa, and it wasa big game. We had beat them in Tampa earlier in the year and that was a pretty big victory for us early in the season. For Tampa this was their season. They were 7-5 in conference and speaking to Mark Borders before the game he told me: "If we lose to ya'll, my career is done." Well they took that to heart and before I know that there is a game being played the score is 17-2 them. It didn't get much better for us, but fortunately they missed some shots. But we couldn't throw a bach ball in an ocean for the first half. They outplayed us, outhustled us and just flat out wanted it more than we did. That's not what got us into first place in the conference and I think the guys were just over their head with this thing called winning and thought that we could just win by showing up. Uh-uh, not the way it works in the Sunshine State Conference. They had a 32-21 lead at halftime. The second half was better, but it still wasn't good. Just when we start to make some shots, we couldn't guard them if they were our grandmothers. The whole game turned from "I can't make a shot-itis" to "Anything you can do, I can do better." JT was on fire. He hit 8 3's in the second half and he saved us from a flat out embarassment. Chris Evans, for Tampa, had the game of his life. We made him look like Karl Malone. He was just doing whatever he wanted against us and that is unacceptable. They won 87-81, dropping our record to 18-6 and 10-3 in conference, but fortunately Lynn blew another lead and we maintained our half game lead in the conference. Nova is now second and Lynn is third.

Today Coach let me skip out on practice to go watch the Winter Park game. Just showing the alma mater and the homeboys some love by showing up there. They had their playoff game vs. Lyman today. Everybody thought WP would win by just showing up, but that's why they play the game right....... It wasn't much of a game, and it was not fun to watch. Winter Park controlled the tempo for most of the game, but struggled to execute offensively. Their defense kept them in the game and as a team they shut down Sanchez, who is getting a scholarship to FAU. At halftime it was 25-12. Winter Park ended up winning it by nine, 52-43. I should have just studied for my test, which I came back and did afterward, but you only get to watch some of your closest friends win a championship once in a lifetime so I don't regret going to the game at all.

It's late and that is my abreviated post. Hope you enjoyed reading it and I will see you in class soon. Tomorrow is going to be a busy day. Class, test and then practice all from 10-4. I should have taken that job @ Midas.
